Chorlton is derived from "ceorl", which means "a freeman of the lowest caste" and "tun", which means "farm, settlement or homestead", thus giving a combined meaning of "settlement of the countryman". Chorlton has come along way from these humble beginnings but has still managed to maintain its charm. Chorlton Green feels a long way from the hustle and bustle of the main shopping centres around and about. with the village on the banks of the River Mersey and offering a golf course and two nature reserves. This is in addition to a large playing field, parks and a cemetery. Chorlton provides its 15,000 residents with a variety of shops, from the usual supermarkets to greengrocers, fishmongers, pubs, bars and restaurants. The inhabitants tend to be predominantly young professionals educated to a degree level, long time residents, young families and working couples. The residents of this pretty little village are well paid and smart. The majority of the accommodation in Chorlton is period flats in the grand properties on Chorlton Green, though there are a few purpose built developments. There are also desirable Edwardian Houses and Victorian Semis available in the area. There is an unused train track running from Stockport to Old Trafford which is to be reused by Metrolink. In the meantime other stations nearby take you into the heart of the city to Manchester Piccadilly Station. There is also an excellent road system around Chorlton with buses that are frequent making it easy to travel into the city or surrounding areas. Also worth taking into consideration is the close proximity to Manchester Airport, ideal for frequent flyers, be it on business or holiday.
