Withington is situated approximately 4 miles south of Manchester City Centre, with a population of approximately 14,000. The area has a cosmopolitan feel with families living alongside young professionals and students. The latter due to the closeness of the University of Manchester, which has one of the highest numbers of students in the UK, and also Manchester Metropolitan University. The village centre is a blossoming area with an array of shops including grocers, chemists, newsagents and food shops, several of the major high street banks, and a few bars and restaurants to socialise in the evening. There is a local library, citizen's advice bureau, a post office, a hospital and a local park with a playground for younger children. The public transport to the city centre in this area is excellent via the bus route, though it would be further improved should the Metrolink tram route be extended to include Princess Road to Withington Hospital. There is also easy access by road to both the city centre and motorways to other areas of the country, mainly the M56 and M62/M60. Withington has a leisure centre offering such facilities as karate classes, keep fit, a fitness suite, swimming pool, and sauna. Hough End Playing Fields offers an open area for tennis courts, football and other sporting activities. If you are looking to rent a flat in Withington, or for lettings south of Manchester, the types of accommodation range from converted flats in period properties as well as some traditional houses and modern purpose built apartment blocks.
